Junior Wasps and SEC Academy defender Patrick Umwungeli has joined AS Kigali on loan.

Last season, the 18-year-old featured for Kiyovu Sports but has now crossed to AS Kigali on a season-long loan deal.

Umwungeli was a regular for the green baggies and SEC Academy chairman Augustin Munyandamutsa believes he is good enough to break into AS Kigali’s first team.

“He had a very good season at Kiyovu. He got lots of playing time out on the field and I’m sure he will do the same at AS Kigali,” he said.

AS Kigali Coach Andrew Gasambugo who also worked with the youngster at SEC Academy, knows what a great addition the player is to his side.

“We’re delighted to welcome him on board. He’s a highly-rated young player and gives us more cover in defense,” Gasambugo said. “He has already played first-team football at Kiyovu and I view his arrival as an important part of his development.”

His impressive displays for Kiyovu earned him a call up to the Junior Wasps last month. He came off the bench to score a stoppage time winner against Mali in the first leg of the 2013 Africa Youth Championship second qualifying round.
