MTN Peace Cup - Quarter-finals (1st leg)

APR 3-1 Sec Academy
Rayon Sport 1-0 Kiyovu
Marines 1-5 Police

Police made their intentions of winning this year’s MTN Peace Cup clear after yesterday’s compelling 5-1 quarter-final first leg victory over Marines at Umuganda Stadium.

It was sweet revenge for Goran Kopunovic’s side who surrendered this year’s Primus League title after a close 1-0 loss against Marines.

Police captain Meddie Kagere scored a hat-trick while Jacques Tuyisenge and Brazilian striker Erivaldo also got their names onto the score sheet.

Amiri Bitenderi scored Marine’s consolation.

The sides will meet again this Sunday for the second leg but for Kopunovic, it’s more or less a sure deal that his side is in the semi-final.

In other matches, defending champions APR kept their hopes of lifting a seventh Peace Cup title intact with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Sec Academy. Burundian international Papy Fatty scored a brace with St. Preux Lionel scoring a third.

It was more of a trial match for Ernie Brandts who left several first team players (Olivier Karekezi, Mbuyu and Kabange Twite, Jean Claude Ndoli, Selemani Ndikumana, Habib Kavuma and winger Dan Wagaluka) on the bench.

Rayon Sport also has one foot in the semi-finals after a hard fought 1-0 win over arch-rivals Kiyovu. Fuadi Ndayisenga was the difference between the sides with his 65th strike.

Bokota Labama, Sina Jerome and Amisi Cedric all missed clear goal scoring opportunities for the blues who still have work to do this weekend.

The second leg of the quarter finals will be played this weekend while the semi finals are due on June 27/28 (first leg) and June 30 and July 1 (second leg).

The final and third place playoff will be held on July 7.

Last year, APR needed penalty shootouts to lift the Cup against Police.
