Athletes have spent the last few months preparing for the CAA Africa Senior Championships in Benin (27 June – 1 July) and others striving towards the ultimate goal of qualifying for the London Olympic Games.
Théoneste Nsengimana is one of the latter and will compete in the two-day Championship for the handicapped which gets underway tomorrow in Belfort, France.
The 23-year-old will line up in the men’s 1500m where he is aiming to run the minimum qualification time of 4 minutes and 08 seconds.
Last year, he ran a personal best of 4:14 seconds at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique and got close to the same time last month during a trial session at Amahoro Stadium.
The field will consist mainly of athletes from Europe.
The national sitting volleyball team, power lifter Théogène Hakizimana and 400m & 800m specialist Hermas Cliff Muvunyi have already qualified for the Paralympics. In Maputo, Muvunyi won a silver medal in 800m T46 (1:57:70) and then followed it up with a gold medal in the 400m T46 (50 seconds and 30 tenths) to book his ticket.
