Jean Baptiste Hakizimana could not hide his frustration after a wobbly five-over-par 76 in what was a bogey-filled final round of the Burundi Golf Open in Bujumbura yesterday.
The golfer who is usually excited about playing on the Par-71 Bujumbura Golf Course was short of answers this time round after carding an overall 292 (8-over-par) in the four-day event which attracted 25 professionals from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Hakizimana started the final round just three shots over par and four behind overall leader Dismas Indiza of Kenya but three bogeys on the front nine coupled with a triple bogey on the back nine could only warrant a 5th spot finish.
After the final round, he was quick to blame the inconsistent greens.
“It’s clear from the scores that it was not an easy course on play on. I struggled with the pace of the greens. It was difficult to putt because some of the greens were holding while others were not,” he noted.
The low point of his final round came on the par-4 12th when he hurled his club in despair following a poor provisional shot, which came after he had just sent his second out of bounds on his way to triple bogey.
“It’s pretty disappointing,” Hakizimana conceded.
Despite carding 75 in the final round, Indiza held on to win the tournament by three shots. His Kenyan counterpart Sullivan Muthugia claimed second place (289) and was followed by Uganda’s Deo Akope in third place (290).
Hakizimana pocketed $900 for his effort.
