Change of mindset is the way to success, Youth Minister says
Youth should have a positive mindset in order to achieve sustainable socio-economic development, Youth Minister Jean Philbert Nsengimana has said. “You have high intellectual capacity and do not wait for the future to start working on your plans, but do it now,” he recommended the 15th congress of the National Youth Council for Rwanda.
The annual congress brings together youth representatives from all districts, higher learning institutions and their coordinating committee at national level to evaluate their achievements and putting together their action plan for further improvement.
For many young Rwandans, unemployment or underemployment have been great challenges. Most of them have been decrying the lack of access to finance and entrepreneurial training as the main obstacles hampering their development progress. For the Minister, the major problem has been lack of commitment and laziness rather than financial issues, which is why in the first place a change in mindset is needed.
“Most successful businesspeople in this country or elsewhere have never even had any training or a start-up capital of millions, but they did have commitment,” Nsengimana told the youth.
The Minister added that the government is making a big effort to eradicate poverty among youth as they constitute a large number of the active population. There are an estimated 4 million young people in the country.
He added that they intend to decentralize all service delivery at sector level where youth centers will be established and mandated to focus on economic development. Decentralization is also a central part of the Youth Empowerment for Global Opportunity (YEGO) program.
Philbert Uwiringiyimana, the coordinator of the Youth Council, for his part said they are going to cooperate with other clusters like religious groups to change mindsets. “We want to show youth that success is in their own hands, but mindset change is essential to make all the process a success,” Uwiringiyimana said.
