“If all the citizens could be attending these trainings, in few years time we would be living in a country without conflicts or misunderstanding between people. We would be more patriotic, we would build our country to a level that would surprise everybody!”

Diana Muhongayire, a student, was clearly exhilarated. Such was the effect of the solidarity training camp she had just concluded in Nkumba Peace and Leadership Center, Burera district.

The National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) continues to mobilize youth through such ingando to help them better understand the national policies and contribute to their realization as constructive citizens.

“Some course cannot be learnt in schools, which is why the Commission can help MINEDUC to deliver training in line with the country’ targets and visions,” said Jean Baptiste Habyarimana the president of the NURC while officially closing the 111th promotion of students who will be attending universities and institutes of higher learning in the year 2010.

The 744 students have undergone a three-week training which, as explained by the president of the commission, consists of courses that help students to be role models, patriots, good decision makers and to fight genocide ideology in the whole community.

“They do learn the country’s cultural values, its historical background, policies in line with peace and reconciliation process and approaches for good governance,” Habyarimana explained. “And we have noticed particular enthusiasm for the introduction in military sciences which develop in them the spirit of protection and patriotism.”

Minister of Youth Protais Mitali, for his part, reminded the trained students of the idea of being smart and responsible in everyday life.

“The country will develop itself based on that smartness in your mindset,” Mitali said. “So you should not betray it by developing bad habits such as drug addiction or mediocrity. Support yourselves by working cooperatively, forming groups, clubs and associations – that’s how your efforts will bear more fruit, all the more so since it will be easier to access credits and loans to achieve your dreams.”
