Last Thursday, the e-Rwanda Project during a ceremony attended by many personalities. The e-Rwanda Project is a project of the Rwanda Information Technology Authority (RITA) that aims to help the government of Rwanda achieve its policies of developing the country through ICT, and turning Rwanda into the ICT hub of Africa.

The e-Rwanda Project will focus on specific activities within Rwanda’s National Information & Communication Infrastructure (NICI) policy and plan, which will have the greatest impact on good governance and improved conditions for the country’s citizens, particularly those most vulnerable, least economically advantaged and vast majority of citizens who live in the rural areas including women, farmers and traders.

The key components of e-Rwanda are:

  • The National Portal – an official Rwandan gateway to all governmental and non-governmental information and procedures that is to use the Internet as a vehicle to project a better image of Rwanda to the outside world and to provide information on Rwanda via the web.
  • ICT Bus – a mobile ICT tele-center that will provide training and access to ICTs in rural areas.
  • Market Pricing System – use the power of mobile and Internet technology to collect and provide information about commodities market prices all over the country.
  • Telemedicine – improving the health of the most vulnerable citizens using modern technology.
  • East Africa Submarine Cable – conduct studies for the government of Rwanda to improve access to the international telecommunication backbone with the goal to get better and cheaper Internet connectivity.

Other key projects are: e-District, the collection of all information required by districts; e-Ntara, for provinces; local government web portal, the source of information, through web, of a typical local administrative area be it for districts and sectors; e-Soko, to help producers of commodities to be up to date with prices; e-Nota, to help all schools in Rwanda provide an online report of students using e-results so that students will no longer go to their schools to check results – any computer with Internet will do that. And many others like e-Faranga, e-Tourism portal …

This will enable citizens to do a lot of things without traveling long distances; they just go to an Internet café and get out with a printed school report, updated information of tourism attractions, with addresses of any restaurants in a certain area, with the daily price of one kilogram of meat and bottle of Mutzig, etc.
