The party, which was attended by the who-is-who from the corporate society as well as many high-ranking officials, was enlivened by music and animation which at times had the revelers belting out Tigo’s slogans.

Alex Kamara, Tigo Rwanda’s CEO, said that the company was excited to join the Rwandan market. He added that they realized that competition with the existing operators would be tough, but that they were ready for it.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Monique Nsanzabaganwa, for her part stressed said that Tigo’s entry into the market was a good addition to the economy and would boost the development of the country.

Tigo is the company trade name of Millicom International Cellular, which specializes in emerging markets where penetration is still low and subscribers look for improved services. Millicom operates in 16 countries across the world, 7 of which are in Africa (Senegal, Ghana, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Mauritius and now Rwanda).
